Richard Lewis Springthorpe, born August 23, 1949, is popularly known as Rick Springfield. He is the son of Eileen Louise (Evennett) and Norman James Springthorpe, a career officer with the Australian Army. His maternal grandparents are English. As a child, he lived at the army camp with his family in Broadmeadows, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
He was a founding member of the pop group Zoot from 1969 to 1971, then started a solo singing career with his debut single “Speak to the Sky” reaching the top of the music charts in Australia in mid–1972. He released “Jessie’s Girl” in 1974 and rose to No. 1 in Australia. He followed with four additional top 10 U.S. hits “I’ve Done Everything for You”, “Don’t Talk to Strangers”, “Affair of the Heart”, and “Love Somebody”. Springfield’s two top 10 U.S. albums are Working Class Dog (1981) and Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet (1982).
As an actor, he starred in the movie Hard to Hold in 1984 and the television series High Tide, 1994-1997, and has appeared in supporting roles in Ricki and the Flash and True Detective (both 2015). He portrayed Dr Noah Drake on the daytime drama General Hospital, 1981-1983, 2005-2008, and 2012. He returned to the show in 2013, celebrating its 50th anniversary with his father, actor Liam Springs.
